BareWhat your photos reveal: the hidden data inside every image

Every photo you take carries hidden data you can’t see on screen — where it was taken, when, on what device, and sometimes who made it. Here is what is in there, and how to see and remove it.
Every image has a hidden layer
Most photos store metadata: extra information saved inside the file alongside the picture itself. Your camera or phone writes a lot of it automatically, and editing apps add more. You never see it in the picture, but anyone you send the original file to can read it.
What a photo can reveal about you
- Where you were. GPS coordinates, often accurate to a few meters. Shared regularly, geotagged photos can map your home, workplace, school, and daily routine.
- When. The exact date and time, often down to the second.
- Your device. Camera or phone make and model, and sometimes a serial number that links many photos to the same device.
- Edit history and software. Which apps opened and changed the file, and when.
- A hidden thumbnail. Some files keep a small preview that can reflect an earlier crop or edit of the image.
- Author and copyright. Name, byline, and contact details a creator attached (IPTC / XMP fields).
- AI and provenance. Whether a tool or AI claims to have made or edited the image — see our Content Credentials (C2PA) guide.
Location is the big one. A single geotagged photo of “home” can reveal your address; a stream of them reveals your patterns.
How to see what is in your own photo
Open the photo in BareMeta. It groups every field it finds, plots any GPS coordinates on a map so you can see exactly what location is stored, and explains what each field means with a glossary of more than 400 metadata terms. Nothing is uploaded — the file is read entirely on your device.
How to remove it

Don’t social networks strip this automatically?
Some do, some don’t, and you cannot rely on it. Large platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and X usually re-encode uploads and drop most metadata. But it varies by service and by how you share: original-quality sends, file attachments by email, cloud-storage links, some chat apps, and photo sites like Flickr can preserve the full metadata. The only way to be sure is to remove it yourself before sharing.

- いつか。 正確な撮影日時。秒単位まで記録されることもあります。
- 使った端末。 カメラやスマホのメーカー・機種、ときには複数の写真を同じ端末に 結び付けるシリアル番号まで。
- 編集履歴とソフト。 どのアプリがいつファイルを開いて変更したか。
- 隠れたサムネイル。 ファイルによっては、以前のトリミングや編集を反映した小さな プレビュー画像が残っていることがあります。
- 作成者と著作権。 作成者が付けた名前・クレジット・連絡先（IPTC / XMP フィールド）。
- AI と来歴。 ツールや AI が「作った・編集した」と主張しているかどうか—— 詳しくはコンテンツ認証情報（C2PA）ガイドを参照。
最も重要なのは位置情報です。 「自宅」で撮った位置情報付きの写真が1枚あるだけで 住所が分かることがあり、それが何枚も続けば行動パターンまで明らかになります。
自分の写真に何が入っているか確認する方法

SNS が自動で消してくれるのでは？
消してくれる場合もあれば、そうでない場合もあり、頼り切ることはできません。Facebook・Instagram・X などの大手は通常アップロード時に再エンコードして大半のメタデータを落とします。しかしサービスや 共有方法によって異なります——オリジナル画質での送信、メール添付、クラウドストレージの共有リンク、 一部のチャットアプリ、Flickr のような写真サイトでは、メタデータがそのまま残ることがあります。 確実にするには、共有する前に自分で削除するのが唯一の方法です。
