BareContent Credentials (C2PA): what they are, how to check them, and how to remove them

Content Credentials are a new kind of metadata that records where a picture came from — including whether AI was involved. Here is what they contain, how to check whether your image has them, and how to remove them if you want to.
What are Content Credentials?
Content Credentials are based on the C2PA standard (the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity). They are a small, signed record — a manifest — that a tool can attach to an image to describe how it was made and edited. Editing apps such as Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, and AI image generators such as OpenAI’s and Google’s, can add them.
A manifest can state which software issued it, when, which edits were applied, and whether generative AI was used. It is sealed with a digital signature, so the record is meant to be tamper-evident: changing the file can break the seal.
Content Credentials vs. EXIF — what is the difference?
EXIF is the metadata your camera writes automatically: shutter speed, lens, date and time, and GPS location. It describes how the photo was captured. Content Credentials are provenance: a signed claim about a file’s origin and edit history, including any AI involvement. Both are hidden data inside the file, and BareMeta can show and remove either.
How to check whether an image has Content Credentials
Open the image in BareMeta. If a C2PA manifest is present, a Content Credentials panel appears and lists what the manifest claims — the issuing tool, any AI involvement, and the edit actions recorded. Everything is read on your device; the image is never uploaded.
Present does not mean proven. BareMeta shows what a creator or their tools attached, exactly as it is stored — it does not cryptographically verify the signature. Treat a credential as “what the file says about itself,” and remember that its absence is not proof of anything either.
How to remove Content Credentials from your image
In BareMeta, Content Credentials are removed by default along with the rest of the metadata when you clean an image — there is nothing extra to do. Cleaning is lossless: the pixels are not re-encoded, so the cleaned copy looks identical.
- Open baremeta.net and drop your image in.
- Review the Content Credentials panel to see what is recorded.
- Leave Keep Content Credentials unchecked to remove them (the default), or tick it to keep them.
- Click clean and download. Everything happens on your device.
Keeping the credentials while removing other metadata can make them invalid: the signature covers the whole file, so once other data changes the seal may no longer match.
Is it OK to remove Content Credentials?
Removing metadata from images you own is generally fine and is a normal privacy step. Do not strip provenance to pass off AI-generated images as real, or to misrepresent work that is not yours — that can violate a platform’s terms or the law where you live.
Should you remove them or keep them?
Remove them when you care about privacy, or simply want a clean file with nothing extra attached. Keep them when provenance matters — for example to preserve an authenticity trail, or to show that you created something. The choice is yours, and BareMeta makes either one a single click.

コンテンツ認証情報は、画像が「どこから来たか」——生成 AI が関わったかどうかを含めて——を 記録する新しい種類のメタデータです。何が入っているのか、自分の画像にそれがあるかを確かめる 方法、そして削除する方法を解説します。
コンテンツ認証情報とは
コンテンツ認証情報は C2PA 規格（Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity）に基づきます。画像が「どう作られ、どう編集されたか」を示すために、ツールが 画像に付与する小さな署名付きの記録（マニフェスト）です。Adobe Photoshop や Lightroom などの編集アプリ、OpenAI や Google などの AI 画像生成ツールが付与することがあります。
マニフェストには、どのソフトが発行したか、いつ発行したか、どんな編集が施されたか、生成 AI が 使われたか、といった情報が記録され得ます。これはデジタル署名で封がされており、改ざんがあれば 分かる（ファイルを変えると封が壊れる）よう設計されています。
コンテンツ認証情報と EXIF の違い
EXIF はカメラが自動で書き込むメタデータです（シャッタースピード、レンズ、 撮影日時、GPS 位置情報など）。これは「どう撮影されたか」を表します。一方 コンテンツ認証情報は「来歴」——ファイルの出所と編集履歴（AI の 関与を含む）に関する署名付きの主張です。どちらもファイル内の見えない情報で、BareMeta は いずれも表示・削除できます。
画像にコンテンツ認証情報があるか確認する方法
画像を BareMeta で開きます。C2PA マニフェストがあれば コンテンツ認証情報パネルが表示され、マニフェストが主張する内容——発行した ツール、AI の関与、記録された編集操作——が一覧されます。すべて端末内で読み取られ、画像が アップロードされることはありません。
「ある＝証明された」ではありません。 BareMeta は作成者やそのツールが付けた 内容を、保存されたまま表示します——署名の暗号的な検証は行いません。認証情報は「ファイルが 自分自身について語っている内容」と捉えてください。逆に、無いことも何かの証明にはなりません。
自分の画像からコンテンツ認証情報を削除する方法
BareMeta では、画像をクリーンするとコンテンツ認証情報も既定で他のメタデータと一緒に削除され ます——特別な操作は不要です。クリーンはロスレスで、ピクセルは再エンコードされ ないため、出来上がるコピーは見た目がまったく同じです。
- baremeta.net を開き、画像をドロップします。
- コンテンツ認証情報パネルで、何が記録されているか確認します。
- コンテンツ認証情報を保持のチェックを外したまま削除する（既定）か、チェックを 付けて保持します。
- 「クリーンしてダウンロード」を押します。すべて端末内で処理されます。
他のメタデータを削除しつつ認証情報を保持すると、認証情報が無効になることがあります。署名は ファイル全体を対象とするため、他のデータが変わると封が一致しなくなる場合があるからです。
コンテンツ認証情報は削除してもよい？
自分が所有する画像からメタデータを削除することは、一般的に問題なく、ごく普通の プライバシー対策です。ただし、AI 生成画像を本物と偽るため、あるいは自分のものではない作品を 偽って示すために来歴を消すのは避けてください——プラットフォームの規約やお住まいの地域の法律に 違反する可能性があります。
削除すべき？ 保持すべき？
プライバシーを重視するとき、あるいは余計な情報の付かないきれいなファイルが欲しいときは 削除を。来歴が重要なとき——たとえば真正性の証跡を残したい、自分が作ったことを 示したいとき——は保持を。選ぶのはあなたで、BareMeta ではどちらもワンクリックです。
